It was the multi-purpose building of it's day, as it was used for township meetings, dances, wedding receptions, movies, elections, school programs, wrestling matches, and even as a temporary school in 1934, after the local school burned. It has a jail cell, which held one prisoner, but now is a display where photos can be taken. After the construction of the new Covington Twp. Multi-Purpose Building, west of town, this old hall was no longer needed. After the Centennial Celebration in 1993, the township was considering its demotlition. The Township Supervisor who at that time was Claude Leinonen, felt it would be an ideal location for a a museum . This effort was started in 1995-1996. After a constitution and a governing board were created, then work on the old building and the collection of artifacts was underway. Some were very small and some are very large, such as Covington Twp.'s very first fire truck. We have been recording local history, using video tapes and audio recordings. We are in the process of creating family files which include obituaries, photo's & other family related materials. We have many Finnish language books & papers. We will help with research without charge. The museum is maintained by voluntary contributions. There is a copier at the museum that is available for recording your information |
